In Washington, Makah has tribal lands managed by a federally recognized tribe. A coastal tribe in Washington, whaling traditions and marine culture.
The Makah and their extended families would share these structures and it was common to have several generations living in each one. Makah Tribe history tells the story of ancient times when the Makah People lived in a world that revolved around the sea and land. Makah Tribe history tells us Makah life revolved around the sea and land. Makah tribe history tells us about the Makah’s keen understanding of their environment and a great respect for the plants and animals which sustained them through the cold, dark and stormy coastal winters. Their continued resistance against completely conforming to Euro-American standard is evident today in the Makah peoples’ continuance of their ancient culture. In the early 1800 s these villages were home to between two thousand and four thousand Makah. These summer camps were closer to the traditional fishing, whaling and gathering areas of the Makah.
