About the Tribal Area
Coushatta Reservation is a reservation in Louisiana associated with this federally recognized tribe, and it spans about 1.1 square miles. The latest FCC BDC filing shows 9 fixed providers and 3 mobile providers across roughly 190 service locations, with current availability of 97.5% at 25/3 Mbps, 3.7% at 100/20, and 2.8% at 1000/100.
Tribal Area Description
Coushatta is a federally recognized tribe in Louisiana with tribal lands. The land base is relevant for broadband planning due to rural service coverage and middle-mile access constraints.
After regaining federal recognition, the Coushatta Tribe began investing in a variety of enterprises in order to provide revenue for their tribal government and jobs for community members. Then, in 1953, the relationship between the Coushatta and the federal government soured, when, despite earlier treaties with the tribe, the Bureau of Indian Affairs terminated all services to the community without congressional approval or community consent. Despite this association, the Coushatta maintained their own culture and language and, throughout the eighteenth century, tribal leaders played an increasingly important role in Creek politics. The Sovereign Nation of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana is a federally recognized Native American Tribe with approximately 960 members. In 1970, Coushatta leaders began petitioning the Indian Health Service to again provide medical care for tribe members.
